verbs +to…(I want to do)
verbs+ to … ( to do / to work / to be etc.)
particularly verbs of thinking and feeling:

decide, learn, want,
expect, plan, need,
forget, try, hope,


What do you want to do?
You don’t need to go shopping as I’ve already gone.
Tom has decided to sell his house.
I forgot to switch my lights off when I got out the car last night.
I tried to study English.

and verbs of saying:

agree, promise, refuse, offer,


They agreed to meet on Friday.

-ing but not to-infinitive

verbs +-ing…(I enjoy doing)

the -ing form after enjoy but we don’t use a to-infinitive:

enjoy, stop, finish, mind, suggest


I always enjoy cooking.
We haven’t finished eating yet.
She keeps changing her mind about the wedding.

Hate, like, love, prefer
