“Hokusetsu” & “Kozaemon” In-store tasting event @ Ikebukuro

You can taste Hokusetsu, Hokusetsu Shuzo, from Niigata prefecture, and Kozaemon, Nakashima Sake Brewery from Gifu prefecture.

Hokusetsu (Hokusetsu Shuzo)

The Hokuetsu Sake Brewery’s Daiginjo sake is handmade with traditional methods and is made using 65% polished Yamada Nishiki rice grown on Sado island, which is the best kind of rice for use in sake brewing.

Hokusetsu Shuzo Sake Brewery was established in 1872. Hokusetsu is a dry, smooth sake, which evokes images of heavy snow in the northern provinces. Committed in their passion to Sado’s water, rice, climate and people, Hokusetsu wholeheartedly makes sake which can only be made by Hokusetsu, and explores the various possibilities of sake with sensibilities suited to the times. Sake produced by Hokusetsu is loved at Nobu restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, London, Milan, and Dubai, among others, which attract celebrities from around the world.

Although Hokusetsu is located on Sado Island, an isle in the Sea of Japan off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, it attracts many celebrities to each year. As you enter the brewery, not only will you be greeted by countless shelves of Hokusetsu sake bottles, but also picture after picture of actor Robert de Niro’s visit to the brewery. Yes, he’s a fan.

Hokusetsu Brewery is home to a variety of top-quality sake of which about 70 percent sold is outside Sado Island. The quality varies from the purest levels of the drink like junmai and junmai ginjo to even plum wine and limited seasonal sake.

Kozaemon (Nakashima Sake Brewery)

Kozaemon is made by our small brewery in mountainous Gifu prefecture, the middle of Japan. NAKASHIMA SAKE BREWING is a local sake brewery with over 300 years of history since 1702. The “Kozaemon” brand was launched in 2001, which has become popular at home and abroad. The use of the subsoil water flowing from Mt. Byobu as its source brings out the full flavor of the rice. You can taste the nature of the Mino region and the brewers’ reflections when savoring the “Kozaemon” products. Based on the idea of making a good match with any dish, NAKASHIMA SAKE BREWING is dedicated to producing “umakuchi” sweet-smelling flavors with body and depth rather than crispy and dry “tanrei” flavors. The product line-up varies from pure rice sake to liquors.

Kozaemon has already been enjoyed in over 30 countries, and they are still looking for new customers.

SAKE NIGHT 2018

Sample over 400 different varieties of sake at this special event.

An evening dedicated to a range of styles and flavors of Japan’s national drink aims to serve a reminder that there is much to appreciate about the beverage. Hosted by Canadian Rakugo-ka (comic storyteller) Sunshine Katsura, “SAKE NIGHT 2018 from All Over Japan” will feature a chance to sample over 400 different varieties of sake (which have received recognition by the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association) from across all of Japan’s 47 prefectures. A complementary spread of food will be available for the Sake Banquet during the second half of the event. Guest speaker Seiichi Kondo, a former diplomat in the Permanent Delegation of Japan to UNESCO, will talk about the significance of Japanese cuisine and guests will be able to learn about the correct way for people to taste sake from the president of the National Research Institute of Brewing, Nami Goto. The event is by invitation only and limited to 200 attendees, so don’t miss out on a chance to be one of the lucky few by registering before noon on Friday June 8.
