ESL Activity I went to the shops to buy … abc memory game

This is a great game, even it works online lesson.

One child starts by saying ‘I went to the shops today to buy …’ something beginning with A (e.g. apple).
The next person continues by saying the previous item (apple) and then something beginning with B (e.g. banana).
Continue around the class, working through the alphabet, adding one more item to the end of the list each time.
If the class do this successfully, ask them to complete the activity! It is great for memory and keeps all the children interested!

I went to shop today to buy… An apple, bananas, cans, dinosaur toys, eggs, fried potato, a gum, a hum, icecreams, juice, kids socks, lolly pop, mont blanc cake, notebook, octopus, pineapple, queen chocolate, red pencil, some snacks, T shirt, UFO noodle, violin, wild wax boy, xylophone, yellow candy and zebra stuff doll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can use the infinitive to explain why we do something.

Why are you washing the car? To help my parents.
Why are you going out? To buy some food.
She turned on the TV to watch the news.
I’d like to go to U.K. to study English.

Use the infinitive with ‘to’.

I went to the cinema to see the new film.

I play computer games to have fun.

money / time to (do something)

We need some money to buy food.
I haven’t got time to watch television.

Compare
She went to the park to play with her friends. (NOT She went to the park play her friends.)
I’m going to Egypt to see the Pyramids. (NOT I’m going to Egypt for to see the pyramids.)

To + verb

to get / to see etc.
I went to the shop to get a newspaper.
They’re going to Brazil to see their friends.

For + noun

for a newspaper / for food etc.
